Governor Zebulon Baird Vance (1862-1865, 1877-1879) not only succeeded Governor Clark, but Vance initially commanded the
Twenty-sixth North Carolina Infantry Regiment, which suffered the greatest loss of any regiment during the American Civil War. Thomas enjoyed a warm relationship with Clark, but Thomas and Vance were staunch political rivals.
